Why dryer vents matter

The U.S. Fire Administration lists failure to clean as the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires. Lint is extremely flammable, and a clogged vent traps heat inside the dryer. A clogged vent also forces the dryer to run longer, which wears out the heating element and costs you more in energy.

Cleaning the whole run

The lint screen only catches part of it. The rest collects in the vent, especially at bends, in long runs, and at the outside hood. We clean from end to end, clear the hood, and check airflow at the outside before and after.

When the vent needs replacing

Many vents we see are foil or vinyl accordion hose, too long, full of sharp bends, or disconnected inside a wall or ceiling. We replace them with smooth metal duct on the shortest practical route, seal the joints with foil tape rather than screws that catch lint, and install a proper hood with a working damper.

Once a year for most households. Large families, long vent runs, or vents that go up through the roof may need it more often.

Why replace the foil or plastic hose?

Accordion hoses trap lint in their ridges, crush easily behind the dryer, and vinyl can melt. Building codes call for smooth metal exhaust duct, with only a short, listed transition hose at the dryer.

My vent goes out through the roof. Can you clean it?

Yes. Roof vents clog faster because lint has to travel up. We clean them from inside and outside as needed and check that the roof cap isn't screened, since screens catch lint.
