Levittown houses, 75 years later

Levittown was built by Levitt & Sons between 1947 and 1951, and it was one of the first mass-produced suburbs in the country. The original capes and ranches were small, built on concrete slabs without basements, and heated by radiant pipes in the floor. Almost none of them look that way today. Most have been expanded with dormers, second floors, and rear additions, and many have new heating and cooling systems.

What that means for ducts and chimneys

• Ductwork added later. Houses that were built with radiant floor heat had no ducts at all. Central air, and often forced-air heat, was added afterward, usually through the attic. Those retrofitted runs are often long, flexible, and easy to crush. See duct repair and sealing.
• Additions change airflow. A new bedroom or extension tapped into an existing duct run often ends up with weak airflow. We check the whole system, not only the room that’s uncomfortable.
• Heating-system chimneys. Many homes vent a boiler, furnace, or water heater through a masonry chimney. After a system replacement or a switch to gas, the flue should be inspected to make sure it suits the new appliance. See chimney relining.
