Historic homes on the North Shore

The hamlet of Oyster Bay, on the harbor that gives the town its name, has some of the oldest houses in the area. Many were built in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and the surrounding North Shore has large estates and custom homes.

Caring for old chimneys

• Unlined or failing flues. Many older chimneys were built without liners, or with liners that have long since broken down. A camera inspection shows what’s there, and relining makes an old chimney safe to use.
• Old brick and soft mortar. Historic masonry needs a softer mortar that’s compatible with the original. Hard modern mortar can crack old brick. See masonry repair.
• Several fireplaces. Older houses often have fireplaces in multiple rooms, each with its own flue. We inspect each one.
